Creative Ways to Use Your Attic and Basement

By Thomas Mitchell

If you live in your own house, chances are you have a basement or some attic space that could be used for something instead of wasted. Here are a few ideas for making the most out of your extra space.

If you are a man or a woman with a family, having a room to retreat to and relax might be a nice thing to have. Instead of using the room to store extra things in an unorganized mess, add some of your favorite things or toys to this room. A typical lounge room would include a comfy recliner or couch, a nice big TV, and maybe a video game system or a collection of DVDs. Other things you can add are a mini bar, a pool table, and maybe even some shag rugs. The choices are endless and you are free to have fun with it.

Another idea for converting unused space into productivity is to build your self a workout room. Basements are usually best for this as they are bigger but an attic might work as well. You might have to have a carpenter come and evaluate your attic to see if it will be able to hold everything you plan on putting in it. Usually you will want some workout mats and maybe even just some kettle bells.

Another option of course, is to actually use the extra space for storage. While this is very typical, not many people do it effectively. Find an organization method that works well for you and implement it. Manage the space wisely and try labeled containers. If done correctly you will have a room to store your things in which you can easily find what you are looking for without hassle.

Another way to really make the most out of your extra space is to turn it into a livable apartment space that you can rent out. This option could potentially make you some extra cash, as well as provide you with a much more challenging side project. Depending on the state of your attic or basement, there are a plethora of things you will need to do to make your apartment livable. Once you have done everything you need to make your apartment space suitable however, you will need to advertise the spot. Online options like Craigslist and Facebook are good spots to start, as well as the classifieds section in your local newspaper.
